I've had a GA or 2 say that to me, too - - not recently. As a former part-time travel agent, I can usually understand some of the stuff on the screen fairly quickly. I'm usually looking during times of IROPS or VDBs for flight availability, but, having EF on my phone more or less makes looking at the screen unnecessary.

The screen might have proprietary information as well as the names and other details of individual customers. I would expect that DL policy is that nonemployees can't have access to this information. However, perhaps there's a similar rule (or should be a similar rule) for DL employees without a need to know, for example if someone isn attempting to fly nonrev. [I've seem employees traveling with families go behind the podium and attempt to rebook themselves during IROPs while (paying) customers wait in line for the available seats.]

I don’t know if the FAA cares, but Delta wants to protect its customers’ privacy, and gate agents have everyone’s full names and possibly other PII displayed at any given moment, so gate agents are trained to protect that by reminding customers not to look at the screen.

I’ve experienced this when a customer wants to look at my monitor while I’m assisting him/her, but I have other customers’ info. displayed so if I let him/her look, they’d see other peoples’ SkyMiles numbers, itineraries, full names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, etc. Most people wouldn’t want strangers to see that info without a need to know it.

I would feel the same way about a random DL employee (not a GA or phone agent) looking at the information, yet nonrevs frequently invite themselves to go behind the podium and look at screens at the gate.

I hope fact, why should a GA be able to see my phone number and email address? It's not like they're going to contact me when my flight is delayed.

canadiancow likes this.

I have noticed an uptick in missing out on upgrades when I am #1 for 1 this year for both F and C+.

And such shenanigans are not confined to ATL. i see them regularly on DTW-NRT flights with upgrades to C+ seats.

Not that it really bothered me - it just surprised me a little, but, one time, a PIT GA who I'm chummy with - -

We were talking about an award trip I had booked - NOT the trip I was flying that day, and he commented - Wow! You booked that for XX thousand mile? How did you do that? . . . . Then he said - and you have X million miles in your account, too! “Shena”: The Definitive “Shenanigans” Thread - FlyerTalk Forums (13)

It just seemed odd to me.

Why should a GA be able to see my email address or phone number or much of my other PII in the normal course of business? Only in extraordinary circ*mstances, should a GA be able to see such information.

Nope. GA love making up rules. There's rules on sharing personal info to others, though not sure if it's FAA, DOT, or state.

In fact I had one agent make comments and then tried to tell me I had no right to see what they commented. A quick email to DL along with a legal quotation and I got to see what was written. DL had to own up to agent breaking rules once I got to see the comments.

Next time I am near a monitor I am going to take a peek so I can ask the GA the specific rule banning me from looking at said monitor if they say something. “Shena”: The Definitive “Shenanigans” Thread - FlyerTalk Forums (21)

I'm surprised DL caved so easily on something like this.

It happened in CA, (LAX) and even if I hadn't quoted the rules, I believe the agent at CS would've shared. Agent ssemed genuinely concerned an agent would, 1)do what they did and 2)document what and why they did it.

Why? Were you actually hoping that the police yanked someone off a plane for being upgraded improperly?!? “Shena”: The Definitive “Shenanigans” Thread - FlyerTalk Forums (32)
