Cathay Award Guide Using Alaska Airlines Miles

Note: Cathay flights cannot be booked using alaskaair.com. Mileage requirements in chart form available on alaskaair.com.

Request your Partner Award reservation on Cathay Pacific by calling Alaska Airlines Reservations at 1-800-252-7522 (TTY: Dial 711 for Relay Services) 5:00 a.m. - Midnight (PT), daily.

Routing Rules:

  • If it's not on the award chart, it's not allowed. For example EUROPE is To/From HKG only.
  • Stopover are only allowed on any CX award for North America awards as destination or origin. For instance: intra-Asia awards do not get a stopover. It must be a North America->Somewhere or Somewhere->North America award to qualify for a stopover.
  • The only awards that do not break at HKG are intra-Asia or North American ones. For instance, Australia-Europe/Middle East/Asia outside of HKG will be two awards (breaking at HKG). The AS award chart can be misleading about this and give you the impression you can fly an award like Australia/Europe-ICN, but the chart for these award types will show "Hong Kong".
  • One stop-over allowed on one way award. You can build open jaw and other advanced routings by booking multiple one way awards. Please note change fee rule below.
  • Allegedly stop-over only in Hong Kong, but some have posted success in other enroute cities such as YVR or SEA.
  • As of 5 June 2018 changes/cancellations made to a booking will incur a $125 fee which is waived for MVPG/MVPG75K. Bookings made prior to 5 June will be allowed one complimentary change or cancellation for up to 60 days prior to date of travel.
  • Awards can be booked 330 days in advance.
  • Cathay and Alaska (or an Alaska flight operated by SkyWest/Horizon on behalf of Alaska) are the only airlines allowed on a Cathay award. No other partner airlines may be used on a single award (e.g. American, JAL, Emirates).

North American Gateway Cities:

Western
Vancouver
San Francisco
Los Angeles
Seattle (Spring 2019)

Eastern (Can not be used if traveling to west coast)
Boston
Chicago
New York (JFK & EWR)
Toronto

Yes, you can (and have to) book by phone. Multi city is fine.

There are a few options to search for space but I found the British airways website the easiest way to search. Just find the individual segments you want. If you want to confirm that the space is actually there, you can use qantas and / or jal website. Then just call alaska to book.

You will need to be a member of the loyalty program for the airline to use their website to search for award space, but it's free to join.

What route are you looking for? Yes, you can book multicity. All CX bookings have to be done over the phone. You can do USA-HKG (stop) HKG-JNB. If you start your award in HKG there is no stopover allowed because stopovers on CX awards are only (supposed to be) allowed in HKG (and CX does not have any flights that stop on the way to JNB -- all flights to JNB on CX depart only from HKG).

Plus if the Sydney in your handle means you are traveling from Sydney Australia, it's two separate awards.

Anyway to apply married segment logic to CX awards?

Example: I've been looking at availability (in general) to Asia for Sept next year. I found some availability LAX-CTU (or CSX) on Hainan. If I type in TPA as the origin, it gives me TPA-SEA-LAX in F, but if I search TPA-SEA (or TPA-LAX) by itself (in order to connect to a CX flight) it doesn't show saver availability on the route.

I assumed this was some kind of married segment logic that the website was using to connect to Hainan, but since I can't use the website to book CX, would this still work? TPA is a huge pain as an origin for Alaska...

I don't understand.

You found LAX - CTU. You found TPA-LAX, via SEA.

What do you want that you haven't been able to find? If you want TPA-SEA and for some reason that's not working, just book TPA-SEA-LAX and drop the last segment. The award should be the same price with it without the last segment.

I'm not sure what you mean about connecting to the CX flight. Are you trying to book 2 different awards?

He is looking for saver availability from TPA-LAX (via SEA) to connect to a partner award at the Gateway LAX. One award, TPA to Asia.

He has indicated that the Saver F is available TPA-SEA-LAX when connecting to HU at LAX, yet the Saver F is not available if the award terminates at LAX.

In theory, it should also be available if he connects to a CX premium cabin award. A call to AS would be necessary as CX cannot be booked online.

Exactly, I'll give AS a call in a few days when my miles post and see what they come up with.

If AS confirms your CX inventory is bookable you can ask if they can book it with the domestic feeder flights you found. If they cannot find it then book the Hainan itinerary that contains the domestic flights you want. Call back immediately (free change within 24 hours) and ask to drop the Hainan segment and replace with CX, keeping the domestic connecting fights.

I apologize if this has been answered already and would appreciate if someone can point me to the source.
I am trying to book an award on CX from the US (via HKG) to JNB, no stopovers. I have both Alaska and AsiaMiles if necessary.
Their own chart shows 140,000 miles in F from North America to Africa; however, on their own website it cannot be searched as one award. Ditto for searching on BA site. However, when I search segment by segment (US to HKG and separately HKG to JNB) the availability is there. If I book it as 2 separate awards, the total will be quite higher than 140,000 indicated on their chart. Am I missing something here? What would be the best way to book this?

If you have found the availability, can't you just call Alaska and ask them to book it? It should be a single award, 70k one way. You can do a stop in Hong Kong or not; it's still 70k total one way.

I'm trying to book JFK-BKK in March 2019, but there is no F availability. ExpertFlyer shows tons of space, but I wonder if I should just book premium economy and then upgrade to F when it becomes available. Is that possible to do with AS miles?

Yes, you can upgrade if availability opens before your departure but unless you have a change/cancel waiver, each change for each ticket will incur a $125 fee after the first 24 hours from booking. If you book PE and then F opens up to HKG you would pay the $125 fee. If at a later time J opened up HKG-JNB/CPT it would be another $125 fee. There is no F cabin on the HKG-JNB/CPT route so that will be in J. F across the Pacific & J to JNB/CPT is 70K Alaska Miles while all J is 62.5K. If you have AS Elite status at MVPG+ you will be exempt from the cancel/change fee.

I would look at CPT as well. That is a new route for CX and they fly the A350-900 on that route. An economy flight between CPT & JNB will cost < $100 on BA and credit 500 EQM + Elite Bonus to AS. The flight is a little over 2 hours. When I flew BA JNB-CPT back in January the fare included luggage, a hot meal (usual economy hot menu quality), seat selection iirc and beer or wine.

Without waiver, I want to point out that even within the first 24 hrs you can only make one change unless your first change is straight out cancel the ticket. i.e. within 24 hrs you make a change (free) and then cancel (and within 24hrs) you will be charged $125 cancellation fee.
