Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction and indirect supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs (SCEP), Incumbent helps persons committed to State correctional facilities prepare to become productive and contributing members of society by teaching them academic skills in literacy and numeracy and by helping them to develop socially acceptable attitudes and interests. The teacher gives individual and group instruction, conducts informal assessment and secured testing, and participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team. The teacher has responsibility for supervising the conduct of the students while in the classroom and may be called upon to assume general custody responsibilities in time of emergency. Is required to maintain a valid teaching credential recognized by the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

This is a 12 month Limited Term position that may be extended to 24 months, with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Special Requirements


  • The position(s) require(s) a(n) Teaching Credentials Certificate. You will be required to provide a copy of your certificate prior to being hired.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility (please attach your letter, if available). SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority; therefore, individuals with other eligibility may be considered in the event no SROA or Surplus candidates apply. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).
