Students of the Month - October (2024)

Selma Ait–Bella, the daughter of Zohra El Gouzi and Driss Ait–Bella, is a senior at Colonial Forge High School. Selma is vice president of the newly founded Black Student Union. She has been a member of National Honor Society and Environmental Club, a tutor at the writing center and an EMT student. Selma has performed in many shows presented by the drama department, performing in VHSL One-Act Theater competition up to Regional and State levels. She was named Outstanding Actor at 2019 VHSL One-Act Regional Theater Competition. She has earned an Academic Letter the past three years. Selma volunteers both at Colonial Forge and in the community through NHS and Environmental Club. She has built a small side photography business throughout high school. Selma will attend a four year university pursue a degree in the field of human rights law/studies.

Matthew Stretton is a senior at Courtland High School. Matthew has been a member of National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. He has served as president of German National Honor Society and the president and gingerbread coordinator of German Club. He has been a student aide for Mrs. Redleman. Matthew has run four seasons of track, winter track and cross country. Matthew is a two-time national gingerbread house championship winner with German Club.

Andrew Turbyfill, the son of Michael and Shanna Turbyfill, is a senior at Fredericksburg Christian School. Andrew has been treasurer of his class’ student government as well as a member of National Honor Society. He is captain of the swim team as well as a member of the Guatemala missions team. Andrew hopes to swim and attend the Merchant Marine Academy.

Aidan Michael Ryan, the son of Amy Ryan, is a senior at James Monroe High School. Aidan has served as captain of the varsity football and track teams. He is a two-time MVP for the indoor and outdoor track teams, and he was named 2019 Football MVP. He has won the Dennis Dodson Award and is a two-time winner of the Lowery Award. Aidan has also been named first team All-Area Athlete. He is a Monroe Scholar and member of DECA. Aidan serves his community through the Mayfield Civic Association Senior Food Drive, an annual turkey drive, community holiday with Xavier Richardson and as a youth football coach at Fredericksburg Field House. Aidan has committed to play football at the University of Virginia and hopes to pursue medical school.

Gabrielle Spears, the daughter of Jamaine and Jessica Pierce, is a senior at Massaponax High School. Gabrielle is a member of National Honor Society, Fredericksburg Christian Athletes and James Farmer Scholars, and she is a captain of the girl’s soccer team. Her favorite class was biology in 10th grade; it made her interested in pursuing a medical career. Gabrielle is proud of consistently earning A’s and B’s, and she was nominated for and attended the STEM BLAST program through University of Virginia. Gabrielle plans to attend a four-year college and major in nursing. She intends to specialize in pediatrics.

Kylie Holt is a senior at Mountain View High School, where she has been an active member in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Kylie is an active member of Young Life for the past two years, where she learned more about her faith with her peers. During the summer of 2019, Kylie participated with her history class to study cultures of western civilization and accompanied the group on a two-week trip to Italy and Greece to experience first-hand what they studied. Kylie has plans for the summer of 2021 to attend a two-week trip with the same group to Scotland and Ireland. Kylie is outgoing, always seeking out new opportunities, and supportive to her classmates. After graduation, Kylie plans to attend Coastal Carolina University, where she will study business.

Claire Lima Rexroat, the daughter of Kevin and Renata Rexroat, is a senior at North Stafford High School. Claire is always positive, generous and kind, and her teachers in the Commonwealth Governor’s School program thoroughly enjoy having Claire in class. Claire is an excellent student, earning academic honors each year, and enjoys tutoring and assisting others as well. She is active in a variety of clubs, activities and community organizations such as Interact, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music, Brain Builders and Old Dominion Humane Society for dogs. Claire has taken on leadership positions in some of these organizations which will position her well for her anticipated career field of business. Her teachers are very proud of Claire’s accomplishments and contributions to North Stafford but more so for the conscientious, service-oriented and encouraging young woman she is.

Mary Hiney, the daughter of Jason and Regina Hiney, is a senior at Riverbend High School. Mary has served as class president for four years, as Drama Club president, Key Club class liaison, vice president of Debate and chair for her class on Principal’s Advisory Team. She was the Division 2 Young Marines Public Affairs Correspondent, representing multiple states during her junior year. She is the light booth director and was a lead actor in “Lend me a Tenor.” Mary has been named AP Scholar with Distinction. She placed second in State in English Oratory at Virginia Classical League Convention, won national contest for Young Marines Video Contest, placed top five in regional debate (public policy), received Cygnus Award for Commonwealth Governor’s School and Cum Laude placement on National Latin Exam. Mary has worked as lead supervisor at Sweetfrog. Mary serves her community through St. Patrick’s Youth Group, Key Club, Kiwanis and Young Marines. She also programs lights for assemblies, talent shows and concerts. Mary plans to attend a four-year university and major in government/ public administration.

Amanda Bowling, the daughter of Tonia Bowling and Kevin Bowling, is a senior at Spotsylvania High School. Amanda has been a member of National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has been a member of the varsity field hockey team. She has received the Knights Character Award and Academic Letter Awards. Amanda has volunteered at her school with All District Chorus, the Red Cross blood drive and with Math Honor Society. She has assisted the school’s athletic trainer and served as manager for the girls basketball team. She has also scanned tickets at University of Virginia football games. Amanda plans to attend Longwood University and major in recreational therapy.

Savannah Dunn was named Student of the Month for September at Brooke Point High School. Savannah is a member of National Honor Society and Operation Smile, which she serves as vice president. She has served as editor and co-editor-in-chief of the yearbook. Savannah is an Ambassador to new students, a Girl Scout, and Jclub and Cafe attendant at the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sports Center. She has also been a kindergarten teacher’s assistant. Savannah has served as varsity cheer captain and received the cheer team’s Most Spirited Award. She has also played varsity lacrosse. She has received the Academic Honors Award. She has also started a cookie decorating business, Sugar Coated by Savannah. Savannah plans to attend a four-year university and major in elementary education or special ed.
