An Easy Favorite

When my kids were little, I used to serve this applesauce as a dessert. Warmed and topped with a pinch of cinnamon sugar and a tiny scoop of ice cream, they thought it tasted like apple pie!

  • It needs only 3 ingredients plus a splash of water.
  • You can use any variety of apples.
  • It’s healthy and delicious, make it to your liking and add a little or a lot of sugar and spice.
  • This recipe freezes well and makes a great snack or even a dessert served warm with a scoop of ice cream.

The Best Apples for Applesauce

We use firm apples for apple pie but any kind of apple is great in homemade applesauce. Try a combination of any of the following: Granny Smith, Gala, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, or Fujis.

A sweeter apple will make a sweeter sauce while a tart apple (like Granny Smith) will result in a more tart sauce. You can add extra sweetener if needed. Try an assortment or mixture of your favorites.

Variations

  • Swap the water for your favorite juice or apple cider.

Smooth or Chunky Applesauce

Mash with a potato masher for a chunkier texture or use an immersion blender (or food processor) to create a smoother apple sauce.

How To Store Homemade Applesauce

Homemade applesauce will keep for about a week in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container.

For a quick kid-snack, seal in snack-sized freezer bags, or reusable applesauce pouches, and squeeze out from one corner just like the ones you see at the store!

How to Freeze Applesauce

Place the applesauce into small containers or freezer bags. I like to freeze in 1-cup portions. Freeze for up to 4 months.

Is applesauce good for you?

Yes, it’s not only delicious, homemade applesauce is really nothing more than mashed apples and cinnamon with a pinch of sweetener. If your apples are a sweeter variety, you can skip the sugar if you’d like or substitute maple syrup or agave.

So Many Ways to Use Applesauce

  • Banana Breakfast Cookies – delicious breakfast on the go
  • The Best Carrot Cake – quick, incredibly moist, and homemade!
  • Homemade Apple Butter – already halfway there
  • Carrot Cake Cupcakes – yummy handheld bite!
  • Baking Substitutions! – use in place of oil!

Potato Masher or immersion blender

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds apples peeled, cored, and chopped (about 6 medium)
  • cup water
  • 2-4 tablespoons sugar* or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cover.

  • Cook 15-20 minutes or until apples are very tender. Remove lid and simmer an additional 5 minutes to thicken.

  • Mash apples with a masher for a chunky consistency or blend/puree with an immersion blender for a smooth consistency.

  • Serve warm or chilled.

Notes

This recipe makes approximately 4 cups of applesauce.

*Apple sauce may need more or less sugar based on the variety of apples. If apples are very sweet, reduce the sugar to 2 tablespoons if desired. If they’re very tart, add more.

Mash with a potato masher for a chunkier consistency or use an immersion blender to create a smoother apple sauce.

Applesauce can be blended in a traditional blender. Ensure the lid is not sealed tightly while the apples are warm or the steam can build up. You may need to add a little bit of liquid to blend smoothly. If you add liquid, the blended sauce can be simmered on medium-low heat until thickened.

For a basic applesauce, use McIntosh and Golden Delicious apples. McIntosh apples are slightly tart and crisp, but soften easily, making them a stellar choice for pies and sauces.

How long does homemade apple sauce last? ›

Homemade applesauce can be refrigerated for a week to ten days; it can also be frozen or canned for longer-term storage. Mott's recommends its applesauce to be used within ten days of opening. First let me introduce our panel.

Is lemon juice needed to can applesauce? ›

Adding sugar to applesauce is optional…. However, lemon juice is not an optional addition. Lemon juice is added to help preserve the apples' natural colour and to assure the acidity of the finished product, since different varieties and harvesting conditions can produce apples of lower acidity.”

How do you make homemade applesauce Rachael Ray? ›

Add the apples and apple juice to a large saucepan. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft. What apples to avoid when making applesauce? ›

Stay away from Red Delicious apples when making sauce. They don't mix well with heat and get undesirably mushy and unpalatable. If you're looking to add a little color to your sauce, keep the skin on while it cooks.

What makes applesauce taste better? ›

The mellow sweetness of toasted sugar adds complexity. Apple cider vinegar helps brighten cooked fruit. Using skin-on fruit improves both flavor and color in the finished product. Aromatics like cinnamon, orange peel, and rose water intensify the flavor of the apples.

Is it cheaper to make or buy applesauce? ›

Not only does the homemade version taste better, but it's way cheaper, too. We call that a win-win! Making homemade applesauce is a great way to use up that big bag of apples that's been sitting in your fridge for two weeks. (It's okay… we all do it.)

What happens if you freeze applesauce? ›

Once frozen and popped out of your Souper Cubes trays, and transferred to freezer bags, it will last up to 6 months in the freezer - even longer if it is vacuum sealed! To thaw, remove the cube of applesauce from the freezer, and place into a bowl.

How do you keep applesauce from turning brown when canning? ›

Some recipes for applesauce include a tablespoon of lemon juice for each quart of sauce to preserve the color and to increase acidity. The addition of ground spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg adds natural color that may mask some of the oxidation.

What thickens applesauce? ›

If you don't have time to wait for reduction, then the best method is to mix arrowroot or tapioca (or both) with a little bit of apple juice or apple cider. Use the resulting mixture as a thickening agent. Add it to the applesauce and let it stew. Before too long, the sauce will have thickened up nicely!

Why is my applesauce foamy? ›

This is the same reaction you observed with the apple slices. It happens when the applesauce hasn't been heated enough to stop enzymatic reactions and there is enough oxygen in the headspace to react with the enzymes. It can also occur if air bubbles are not removed after the applesauce is poured into the jar.

Will homemade applesauce thicken as it cools? ›

You can also pass the sauce through a mesh strainer to separate the skins from the sauce. 7The applesauce will thicken a little as it cools, but if it seems too watery, place the applesauce back into a pot and simmer until reduced a little.

Why is my homemade applesauce pink? ›

If you leave the skins on, you'll end up with pink applesauce, like mine, if you've used red apples. You'll want to puree the applesauce if you've left the skins on and strain it, otherwise, it can get “stringy” and I don't care for that texture.

Why is my homemade applesauce watery? ›

Sometimes we accidentally add too much water to our recipe, or the apples produce more juice than anticipated which leaves us with watery applesauce. Luckily, it is so easy to thicken homemade applesauce. We just need to cook it longer to help the water evaporate.

Why does homemade applesauce turn brown? ›

During storage, applesauce may darken at the top of the jar because the oxygen in the head space is reacting to enzymes. Enzymatic browning is not harmful, but makes the product appear less appetizing.
